European venture capital investment in Q2 down on quarter and year13/07/2007. Source: AltAssets.
In the second quarter of 2007 less than €1.4bn of venture capital was invested in Europe, down slightly from Q1 and substantially down from the €1.7bn invested in the second quarter of 2006, according to data released by Library House. France allowed Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands to leapfrog it in the quarterly league table of the largest European venture capital markets, the report found. Despite the fall in investment in French companies, the top European venture capital firm this quarter (by syndicated deal amount) was Paris-based Sofinnova Partners, which participated in deals worth €86.9m. London-headquartered 3i Group was second in Europe, with total deal values amounting to €78.5m.
The most active investors by number of deals were Germany's High-Tech Gründerfonds, participating in nine deals, and Seed Capital (Oxford Technology VCTs) with eight deals.
The UK maintained its place at the top of the European venture capital league table, taking a 28 per cent share of investments in the second quarter.
In the Netherlands venture capital figures have increased since the beginning of 2006. Over €128m of venture capital was invested in the country in the second quarter of this year, compared to just €37m in Q2 2006.
