Energy and commodities-focused private equity firm Denham Capital Management has established a London office. The new office will be led by Dr Louis van Pletsen, who has joined the firm as managing director. Dr van Pletsen's primary responsibilities will include origination of transactions in Europe, Russia/CIS, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
Stu Porter, managing partner of Denham Capital, said, 'With more than 20 years of experience in the energy sector, in both developed and emerging economies, we are confident in Louis's ability to lead the London office and look forward to his many contributions as we enter this exciting phase for Denham.
'The establishment of a London office is a first step in our plans to expand Denham's reach, capitalising on our successful US platform by developing our capabilities in various international markets,' Porter continued.
Most recently, Dr van Pletsen served as managing director of the Global Markets division and as head of the International Energy Group at Nomura International in London, where he was responsible for marketing structured finance, asset finance and capital markets capabilities to the energy and commodities sectors.
Prior to Nomura, he led Continental European origination of utility transactions at Credit Suisse First Boston. Previously, he was head of international business development in London for African utility provider Eskom.
Dr van Pletsen began his career at investment house Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa in 1986, where he was responsible for corporate investment strategy across a wide range of manufacturing and service sectors.
Denham Capital makes direct investments in the energy and commodities sectors. The firm typically targets equity investments in the $50-250m range. It has offices in Boston, Houston and New Jersey.
