US venture capital investment climbed eight per cent in the third quarter of 2007 compared to the same period last year to reach $8.07bn, according to the Quarterly Venture Capital Report released today by Dow Jones VentureOne and Ernst & Young. This marked the ninth consecutive quarter of gradual year-over-year growth in dollars invested and is the highest quarterly investment total since the first quarter of 2001.
However, deal flow was down to 635 during the quarter from 676 in the third quarter of 2006.
Some $3.81bn was put to work in 224 later rounds, the most invested in late stage companies since 2001, while combined seed and first round investment remained steady year-on-year at $1.74bn.
The overall median for a venture capital deal in the third quarter stood at $7.92m, a new record.
‘The third quarter reinforced that there are innovative and exciting private companies across the industries in which VCs invest,’ said Joseph Muscat, Americas director of the Ernst & Young Venture Capital Advisory Group. ‘Fuelling this innovation are the larger deal sizes seen this quarter. The overall level of investment and larger deal sizes are suggestive of a continued bullish view of these companies’ prospects and liquidity options.’
