During the three-month period ending 30 September 2007, buy-out funds invested a total of $3.3bn in Canadian companies in a total of 39 reported transactions, according to Canada's Venture Capital and Private Equity Association and Thomson Financial. In comparison, $12.2bn was invested in 107 reported buy-outs of Canadian companies during the full year of 2006.
'The third quarter data clearly shows that the buy-out sector in Canada remains strong, in spite of recent instability in the credit markets,' said Rick Nathan, president of the CVCA and managing director of Kensington Capital Partners. 'On an annualised basis, the activity in Q3 would represent a new record year for Canadian buy-outs, exceeding the total investment levels and the number of reported transactions of last year's record pace.'
'It is remarkable to note that even without the Bell Canada buy-out, our private equity markets remain on a pace to double in size yet again this year,' added Nathan, 'but of course we cannot exclude it - the Bell Canada deal is an historic transaction in our markets.'
The proposed buy-out of BCE was reported during the second quarter with a total value of $47.2bn.
