Former Bain & Company employees Ross Gatlin and George Stelling have established Prophet Equity, a new firm focused on the mid market, particularly the lower mid market. The Southlake, Texas-based firm's first fund, Prophet Equity I, will be launched in early 2008. It will have a $250m target and hard cap. Prophet Equity I is expected to make control investments in companies with revenues under $500m. It will focus on special situations, turnarounds, acquisitions, bankruptcies and reorganisations.
Gatlin, CEO and managing partner, said, 'Given the credit crunch and the demands placed on small and mid-sized business, being a passive financial or strategic buyer with deep pockets is no longer good enough. You have to partner with management and bring tools to the table which are powerful and proven for turbo-charging growth and delivering tangible value at strategically viable companies.'
Gatlin and Stelling met while working at Bain & Company in Dallas in 1994. Prior to Bain, Gatlin worked at Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin. Gatlin was also a founding principal at The Carlyle Management Group and a founding partner at Insight Equity.
Stelling began his career with Price Waterhouse. Later he joined Franklin Mint. Since 2002 Stelling has worked at technology companies including ON Semiconductor. He then joined NVIDIA Corporation as CIO and global services leader.
