Venture capital firms invested $543m across 98 deals in India during 2007, up from the $500m invested in 94 deals in 2006, according to a study published by Venture Intelligence in partnership with the US-India Venture Capital Association. More than half the venture capital investments during 2007 were below $5m and 23 per cent were below $2m.
'With early stage investments accounting for about 66 per cent of all investments during the year, the resurgence in seed and first round investments has been a key highlight of 2007,' said Arun Natarajan, founder and CEO of Venture Intelligence.
The IT and IT-enabled services sector attracted the most interest, with 65 investments worth a total of about $377m.
Sequoia Capital India retained its status as the most active venture capital investor in India, the study found, with nine investments during the year.
