16/04/2008Source: AltAssets.

Maritime and energy industry veteran Peter C Georgiopoulos has launched Green Maritime Partners, a private equity fund targeting environmentally sustainable investments within the maritime and clean energy sectors. Georgiopoulos himself will provide the capital for the fund.

Georgiopoulos said, 'Environmental reform in the maritime industry is becoming a critical issue. GMP also intends to fund promising projects in the clean energy area outside of the maritime industry. I am proud to be part of this important initiative.'

In the maritime industry, GMP will target businesses dedicated to emissions reduction, energy efficiency, environmental remediation and other sustainability issues. The fund will also focus on alternative and renewable energy assets related to the clean energy sector. GMP will look to invest between $5m and $20m, according to a statement.

Georgiopoulos will serve as chairman of the new vehicle, while GMP co-founder Chris Teryazos will be responsible for its operations. Previously, Teryazos was with mid-market private equity firm Pegasus Capital Advisors.

Georgiopoulos is currently chairman and CEO of General Maritime Corp., chairman of Genco Shipping & Trading and chairman of Aegean Marine Petroleum Network.
