Lightspeed Venture Partners has closed Lightspeed Venture Partners VIII on $800m. The fund had an original target of $675m. In the US and Israel, Lightspeed will continue to focus on seed and early stage investments, primarily in the IT and cleantech sectors. Within the IT sector, areas of interest include internet, software, enterprise infrastructure, communications, mobile technologies and semiconductors. Within the cleantech sector, the firm is looking particularly at energy generation, efficiency and storage.
In China and India, Lightspeed is pursuing a balanced investment programme encompassing early stage technology companies and growth stage companies in a range of product and service businesses.
Lightspeed managing director Peter Nieh said, 'While we expect the majority of Lightspeed VIII portfolio companies to be headquartered in the US, Lightspeed investment professionals have been investing internationally for over ten years, and we expect to deploy substantial capital in China, India and Israel.'
The closing of Lightspeed Venture Partners VIII brings the firm's committed capital under management to approximately $2bn.
Lightspeed's portfolio companies have included Blue Nile, Brocade, Calista, Ciena, DoubleClick, eHealth, Galileo Technology, Growth Networks, Informatica, Kiva Software, LightLogic, Maker Communications, Metasolv, Openwave, Quantum Effect Devices, Riverbed, Sirocco, Virsa Systems and Waveset.
