American Capital Strategies opens second Boston office, expands sponsor finance group
08/05/2008. American Capital Strategies has opened a second office in the Boston area to expand its sponsor finance group's investment activities. The new office will be led by Tim Robinson, who the firm has appointed as a principal. In his new role, he will be joined by David Morris as vice president and Dan Hodges as associate.

Partners Group opens China office
07/05/2008. Switzerland-based alternative asset manager Partners Group has opened an office in Beijing. The new location adds to the firm’s existing network of offices in Zug (headquarters), San Francisco, New York, London, Guernsey, Luxembourg, Singapore, Tokyo and Sydney.

PPM Capital renames itself Silverfleet Capital
06/05/2008. European private equity house PPM Capital has changed its name to Silverfleet Capital, following a buy-out in November 2007 from its previous owner, Prudential.

Swiss firm SCM opens Hong Kong office
30/04/2008. Zurich-headquartered SCM Strategic Capital Management has opened a new office in Hong Kong. The news follows the establishment of SCM Strategic Capital Management Asia earlier this year.

Swiss Adamant Biomedical Investments establishes Adamant Ventures in UK
17/04/2008. Swiss healthcare-focused financial advisor Adamant Biomedical Investments has formed a new venture capital subsidiary in the UK, Adamant Ventures. Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, Adamant Ventures will target private equity investments in healthcare companies based in the UK, Scandinavia, Central Europe and the US.

Partners Group opens Luxembourg office, hires Jerry Ludig
16/04/2008. Zug, Switzerland-headquartered alternative asset manager Partners Group has added a new location to its office network. The Luxembourg office is Partners Group's ninth office.

Peter Georgiopoulos launches fund for maritime and clean energy industries
16/04/2008. Maritime and energy industry veteran Peter C Georgiopoulos has launched Green Maritime Partners, a private equity fund targeting environmentally sustainable investments within the maritime and clean energy sectors. Georgiopoulos himself will provide the capital for the fund.

New York State Common Retirement Fund to commit $500m to green investments
11/04/2008. The New York State Common Retirement Fund has announced its intention to increase its commitments to environmentally-focused investment strategies by $500m over the next three years.

DLJMB opens Michigan office

GLE acquires early stage investment specialist YFM
04/04/2008. GLE Group, a UK angel and early stage venture capital provider to small and growing enterprises in Europe, has completed its acquisition of early stage investment specialist YFM Group. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Partners Group opens Sydney office, appoints Martin Scott, Mike Siebert
03/04/2008. Zug, Switzerland-headquartered alternative asset manager Partners Group has opened an office in Sydney. Former Zurich Financial Services head of investment sales Martin Scott has been appointed to the new office.

CapMan hires Jukka Ruuska, establishes fund to invest in listed companies
31/03/2008. Nordic private equity firm CapMan has appointed Jukka Ruuska, president of the OMX Nordic Exchanges and the Stockholm Stock Exchange, to help the firm establish an equity fund focusing on listed companies in the Nordic region. NVP India hires Mohan Kumar, opens office in Bangalore

CalSTRS awards $200m mandate to Invesco
19/03/2008. The California State Teachers' Retirement System has announced that Invesco Private Capital will manage its second private equity fund of funds portfolio of new and next generation manager partnership investments. CalSTRS's New and Next Generation Manager Fund II is a $200m private equity portfolio.

Ferd Private Equity spins out, renames itself Herkules
17/03/2008. Norway's Ferd Private Equity has renamed itself Herkules Capital to mark its independence from Ferd AS. The firm will relocate its offices to central Oslo.

IDG Ventures Atlantic closes $280m fund, renames itself Flybridge
17/03/2008. Boston-based Flybridge Capital Partners, formerly known as IDG Ventures Atlantic, has closed its latest fund, the $280m Flybridge Capital Partners III, focused on early stage venture investments.

Carlyle Capital Corporation to wind up
17/03/2008. Carlyle Capital Corporation, the Carlyle Group's $22bn mortgage-backed securities fund, intends to file for compulsory winding up in Guernsey, according to a statement.

Lyceum targets investments in legal services sector, hires three
06/03/2008. UK mid-market private equity firm Lyceum Capital is targeting investment opportunities in the legal services sector, which should arise from the Legal Services Act 2007. The firm has established a new legal industry advisory board and recruited Tony Williams, Paul Hewitt and Professor Richard Susskind, OBE to the board.

Pequot Ventures to become independent from Pequot Capital
05/03/2008. Pequot Ventures, the New York City-based venture capital arm of hedge fund Pequot Capital Management, plans to become independent from Pequot Capital. The firm will rename itself FirstMark Capital. The deal still requires investor approval.

Advent partner Istvan Szoke to build CVC's CEE team
03/03/2008. Europe and Asia-focused buy-out house CVC Capital Partners has hired Istvan Szoke to build an investment team focusing on the firm's CEE activity.

Baird expands activities in China
03/03/2008. Baird Private Equity, the private equity group affiliated with Robert W Baird & Co., has launched a China-based investment team, Baird Capital Partners Asia. Operating out of offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, the team will focus on growth equity investment opportunities in Greater China, in sectors including business services, manufactured products and healthcare.

FountainVest to receive $400m from Canadian investors
26/02/2008. The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, the investment management division of the Canada Pension Plan, and Teachers' Private Capital, the private investment arm of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, are investing $200m each in newly established Chinese private equity fund FountainVest. The CPPIB has also opened an international office in Hong Kong.

JPMorgan allocates $750m to private equity investment in Asia Pacific
20/02/2008. JPMorgan Asia Pacific is committing $750m to mid-market private equity investment opportunities in the Asia Pacific region. The expansion will be headed by Varun Bery and John Troy, co-founders of private equity firm TVG Capital Partners, who are joining JPMorgan as managing directors.

GIMV, KBC establish joint investment vehicle for Russia
12/02/2008. Belgian private equity firms GIMV and KBC Private Equity have teamed up to establish a new firm, Eagle Capital Partners, to target the Russian market. The firms are planning to invest around €10m each per year over the next three years.

BVCA establishes Global Buyout and Mid-Market Committees
05/02/2008. The British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association has added two new sector committees, the Global Buyout and Mid-Market Committees, to its existing Venture and Enterprise committees. The restructuring is a result of the BVCA's recent strategic review, which included a survey of all member firms.

Kohlberg Capital establishes new distressed investment platform
01/02/2008. Kohlberg Capital Corporation, a publicly-traded affiliate of mid-market buy-out firm Kohlberg & Co., in partnership with Steven Panagos and Jonathan Katz, has formed a new distressed investing platform, Panagos Katz Situational Investing. The new business will invest in the debt and equity of companies that are entering into or are in the process of restructuring due to financial or operational distress.

Australian venture capital firm Southern Cross opens Silicon Valley office
29/01/2008. Sydney-based early stage technology venture capital firm Southern Cross Venture Partners has established a new office in Palo Alto, California. The new office will be led by Southern Cross co-founder and managing director John Scull.

Paine & Partners backs MBO of Capital Z's hedge fund sponsorship business
25/01/2008. San Francisco and New York-based private equity firm Paine & Partners (formerly Fox Paine) has backed an MBO of the hedge fund sponsorship business from Capital Z Investment Partners. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

VCM hires Pascal Feucher to head new Paris office
14/01/2008. German private equity fund of funds specialist VCM Capital Management has established a new office in Paris, to be led by managing director Pascal Feucher.

Ross Gatlin, George Stelling launch mid-market firm Prophet Equity
19/12/2007. Former Bain & Company employees Ross Gatlin and George Stelling have established Prophet Equity, a new firm focused on the mid market, particularly the lower mid market. The Southlake, Texas-based firm's first fund, Prophet Equity I, will be launched in early 2008. It will have a $250m target and hard cap.

Karen Spilizewski to lead RiverVest's new Ohio office
19/12/2007. Life science venture capital firm RiverVest Venture Partners is to open an office at the Cleveland, Ohio-based BioEnterprise facility, a bioscience technology initiative. The office will be managed by Karen Spilizewski, who is joining RiverVest on a part-time basis as a vice president, as of 1 January 2008.

Investment bank Allegiance hires John Sloan to start private equity fund
12/12/2007. Dallas-based investment bank Allegiance Capital has appointed former The Thompson Company CEO John R Sloan to the new position of vice chairman. In his new position Sloan will be part of the company's senior leadership team, with responsibility for initiating the company's private equity fund, and handling other complex investment transactions.

Metalmark to become part of Citi
11/12/2007. Mid-market buy-out firm Metalmark Capital has agreed to become an investment centre within CAI Alternative Investments.

Seed investment specialist Iveagh teams up with Triple A Partners
06/12/2007. Iveagh, a London-based private investment firm of which the Guinness family is a major shareholder and principal client, has agreed to become a shareholder in Asia Alternative Asset Partners (Triple A Partners), a joint venture between Hans Tiedemann, Paul Smith, Roger Pyrke and CLSA. Iveagh will be responsible for building an investment management team, with a focus on seeding Asian and other emerging markets managers.

Early stage venture capital firm BlueRun establishes Beijing office
05/12/2007. Early stage venture capital firm BlueRun Ventures has opened a new office in Beijing. The announcement follows the firm's recent appointments of William Qu and Mike Ding in China.

Wasatch changes name to EPIC Ventures

Dutch pension fund ABP in negotiations to team up with Cordares

HarbourVest to list new investment vehicle on Euronext Amsterdam
06/11/2007. Private equity fund of funds manager HarbourVest Partners has announced plans to list HarbourVest Global Private Equity (HVPE), a newly established closed-ended investment company, incorporated in Guernsey, on NYSE Euronext in Amsterdam. The new company will be managed by HarbourVest Advisers, an affiliate of HarbourVest Partners.

GP Investments opens Mexico office
06/11/2007. GP Investments, the Brazilian buy-out firm that has just closed its latest private equity fund, GP Capital Partners IV, above its $600m target on $1.3bn, has opened a new office in Mexico City, headed by GP partner Márcio Tabatchnik Trigueiro.

CHAMP Private Equity opens office in Singapore
30/10/2007. Australian-based CHAMP Private Equity is opening a new office in Singapore. The Singapore team will focus on supporting existing CHAMP portfolio companies and on originating and completing mid-market acquisitions in Southeast Asia that can benefit from CHAMP's network in Australia and New Zealand, and from the networks of CHAMP's US affiliate, Castle Harlan.

Adveq to open office in China
23/10/2007. Private equity fund of funds manager Adveq plans to open an office in Beijing later this year. The new office will be Adveq's fourth - the firm already has operations in Zurich, Frankfurt and New York. The US presence was established in summer 2007.

Swiss firm Partners Group expands investment activities in Italy

ICG opens New York office, recruits North America-focused investment team
24/09/2007. UK firm Intermediate Capital Group has opened an office in New York and recruited five senior investment executives to work in its new office. The new office is ICG's first in the US, and will be used to provide intermediate capital solutions to the North American market.

Mubadala to buy 7.5 per cent stake in Carlyle for $1.35bn
20/09/2007. Mubadala Development Company, an investment and development company wholly owned by the government of Abu Dhabi, has agreed to buy a 7.5 per cent stake in The Carlyle Group for $1.35bn. The minority investment includes no associated voting rights and is subject to value-related protective rights. Mubadala has also committed $500m to a new Carlyle fund.

Buy-out team spins out of ABN AMRO Capital
17/09/2007. The Northern European mid-market buy-out team of ABN AMRO Capital, now called AAC Capital Partners, has reached an agreement with ABN AMRO to transfer the control of the team's activities to a management company which is majority-owned by the executives of AAC Capital Partners in Amsterdam, London and Stockholm.

CCMP exits M&H Plastics
14/09/2007. Buy-out and growth equity specialist CCMP Capital, on behalf of J.P. Morgan Partners, has agreed to sell Maynard & Harris Plastics to Bank of Scotland Corporate's Integrated Finance division and company management. Terms of the transaction where not disclosed.

Blackstone to invest in Latvian Lattelecom
14/09/2007. The Blackstone Group is to invest a reported $178m for a 51 per cent stake in Latvian telecommunications company Lattelecom, majority-owned by the Latvian government, as part of a $575m MBO.

PPM Capital to be independent from M&G by year-end
12/09/2007. Mid-market private equity specialist PPM Capital and M&G, the fund management arm of life insurance and pensions provider Prudential, has confirmed that their discussions for a buy-out of PPM are close to completion, with a transaction expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Nomura, Norinchukin Bank, Development Bank to establish pe fund of funds
12/09/2007. Global financial services company Nomura Holdings is set to join forces with The Norinchukin Bank, the central bank for Japan's agricultural, forestry and fishery industries, and the Development Bank of Japan to establish a joint private equity venture offering investment advisory and discretionary investment management services in the private equity fund of funds segment.

Swedish firm SEB Venture Capital opens London office
11/09/2007. SEB Venture Capital, the venture capital arm of Swedish financial services firm Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken, has opened a new office in London. SEB Venture Capital's head office is in Stockholm, Sweden.

Saw Mill closes $270m fund
07/09/2007. Saw Mill Capital has closed its latest fund, Saw Mill Capital Partners, above its $250m target on $270m. The final closing was the fourth closing of the fund. A first closing was held on $128m in December 2006.

Swiss Partners Group opens Tokyo office, appoints Kawamura to head new team
04/09/2007. Zug, Switzerland-headquartered alternative asset manager Partners Group has opened a new Asian office in Tokyo. The firm already has an office in Singapore, which was established in September 2004. The new office is headed by senior vice president Junichiro Kawamura.

Advent International opens Kiev office
03/09/2007. Buy-out firm Advent International has opened an office in the Ukraine. The Kiev-based team will be headed by Tamas Nagy and Natalie Polischuk will join the office as principal.

Marvin Traub forms TSM Capital to invest in early stage fashion companies
29/08/2007. Marvin Traub, the former CEO and chairman of Bloomingdales, and his business partners Mortimer Singer and Aslaug Magnusdottir have formed a new investment firm. TSM Capital invests in luxury brands and retailers within the apparel, accessories, cosmetics, jewellery and home sectors. The firm focuses on early stage businesses with revenues ranging from $5-50m per year.

Australian DB Capital Partners spins out of Deutsche Bank
29/08/2007. Deutsche Bank has spun off its Australian direct private equity business, DB Capital Partners, to become a new independent company, Propel Investments. The new firm is led by former Deutsche Bank executives Peter Dowding and Albin Kurti.

Carlyle opens Warsaw office, led by Ryszard Wojtkowski
23/08/2007. The Carlyle Group has established a team to conduct private equity investments in Central and Eastern Europe. The Warsaw, Poland-based team will be headed by managing director Ryszard Wojtkowski.

DFJ, Esprit join forces
06/08/2007. Venture capital group Draper Fisher Jurvetson has acquired a strategic stake in European venture capital firm Esprit Capital Partners. The deal makes Esprit DFJ's exclusive partner in Europe.

Lehman Brothers raises $500m in fund of funds IPO
18/07/2007. Lehman Brothers Private Equity Partners has announced the successful IPO of its shares on Euronext Amsterdam. The company has achieved its target of raising $500m through a placing of 50 million shares at $10 per share.

Swiss Partners Group teams up with Sumitomo Mitsui Asset Management in Japan
18/07/2007. Switzerland-based global alternative asset manager Partners Group has announced a cooperation agreement with Sumitomo Mitsui Asset Management in Japan. SMAM acts as investment advisor to various corporate Japanese pension plans.

KKR moves forward on New York Stock Exchange listing
04/07/2007. Private equity house KKR has filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed initial public offering of its common units representing limited partner interests in its partnership. The firm intends to apply to list its common units on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol ‘KKR’.

Golden Acquisition, new PE firm, launches
26/06/2007. A partnership of retail industry and asset management specialists has announced the formation of Golden Acquisition, a private equity firm that will focus on retail and consumer brands. Golden Acquisition, which was formed by the principals of Hudson Capital Partners, will operate separately from Hudson Capital’s asset disposition business.

Blackstone prices $4.1bn IPO
22/06/2007. US buy-out giant The Blackstone Group has priced its IPO at the top end of the range. The IPO of 133.33 million common units representing limited partner interests in Blackstone has been priced at $31 per share. With $4.133bn raised this IPO is one of the largest in US history.

CalPERS awards discretionary emerging markets mandate to EMAlternatives
15/06/2007. The California Public Employees' Retirement System has awarded EMAlternatives an initial $100m discretionary mandate for investments in emerging private equity markets.

Global Infrastructure Partners opens Hong Kong office

China's government to acquire stake in Blackstone
22/05/2007. The State Investment Company in China, a foreign exchange investment company that will soon be established by the Chinese govenment, has agreed to make a $3bn investment in The Blackstone Group in the form of non-voting common units.

SBI teams up with Goldman Sachs to jointly invest in Japan's mid-market
22/05/2007. Japanese financial services provider SBI Holdings has agreed with Goldman Sachs to jointly invest in mid-market companies in Japan. Under the agreement, SBI will sell 40 per cent of its buy-out and enterprise revitalisation funds unit, SBI CAPITAL Co., to Goldman Sachs.

Quadrangle opens new office in London
22/05/2007. New York-based Quadrangle Group has opened a London office to expand its private equity activities in Europe. This is the firm's first international office.

Teachers' Private Capital opens first international office in London
11/05/2007. Teachers' Private Capital, the private investment arm of the CAN$106bn Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, has opened an office in London, its first office outside of Canada.

Skyline Ventures opens new office in Boston
02/05/2007. Skyline Ventures, a US venture capital firm focused on medical devices and life sciences, has announced that it will open a satellite office in Boston. Skyline has also announced that Dr Stephen J Hoffman has joined the firm as managing director. The addition of Dr Hoffman brings the number of investment professionals at Skyline to six.

Altamir and Amboise Investissement plan to merge
02/05/2007. Altamir & Cie and Amboise Investissement, both managed by Apax Partners SA, are planning to merge their businesses to create a listed vehicle with a market capitalisation of about €250m and a free float of more than 95 per cent. The listing of the shares of the merged entity would be transferred to Eurolist B by Euronext Paris.

European Capital opens new office in Frankfurt

Old Lane to become part of Citi
13/04/2007. Citi and Old Lane Partners, L.P. has reached a definitive agreement for Citi to acquire 100 per cent of the outstanding partnership interests in Old Lane Partners, LP and Old Lane Partners, GP, the manager of a global, multi-strategy hedge fund and a private equity fund with total assets under management and private equity commitments of approximately $4.5bn. Old Lane will operate as part of Citi Alternative Investments, Citi's integrated alternative investments platform.
