Israeli high-tech companies raise $617m in Q1 2008 29/04/2008. In the first quarter of this year 135 Israeli high-tech companies raised $617m from venture investors, the highest amount in seven years, according to a quarterly survey from the IVC Research Center. The capital raised in the quarter was 52 per cent above that raised by 121 companies in the first quarter of 2007, and 23 per cent above the previous quarter's amount raised by 115 companies. 
US private equity fundraising up 32 per cent on year in first quarter 09/04/2008. European private equity investment reaches 68.3bn - preliminary figures

European equity capital invested in 2007 could exceed the 71bn of 2006, according to preliminary figures released by PEREP_Analytics, a new and independent data-gathering body endorsed by the European Private Equity and Venture Capital Association and 14 national associations in Europe. Preliminary figures in 2006 showed lower investment levels than in the current data for 2007. Final figures for 2007 may, therefore, be revised upwards from the current 68.3bn.

US Web 2.0 investment jumps 88 per cent in 2007 to $1.34bn 19/03/2008. Last year venture capitalists invested a record $1.34bn into 178 Web 2.0 deals in the US, up nearly 88 per cent over amounts invested in 2006, according to new data announced by Dow Jones VentureSource.

The amount invested was the highest since 2001, when $2.87bn was invested in 62 deals. It represents a five per cent increase over 2006, although deal flow was down by 14 deals in 2007. 
Value of European buy-outs in 2007 at 175bn 13/02/2008. Last year the value of European buy-outs increased by 0.7 per cent to 175.3bn from 174bn in 2006, according to the latest European Buyout Review by Incisive Media in association with Bridgepoint. The volume of deals was up six per cent to 775 transactions in 2007. 
PE industry invests heavily in research, development - BVCA report 13/02/2008. Private equity-backed companies continue to be a major driver of the UK economy, The Economic Impact of Private Equity in the UK report published by The British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association confirms. In the five years to 2006/2007, in private equity-backed companies, research and development expenditure increased by 14 per cent per annum, compared to a national growth rate of just one per cent per annum. 
Mid-Atlantic VCs more active in Q4 2007 than a year ago 06/02/2008. In Q4 2007 a total of 89 per cent of the regional investors closed at least one new investment, compared to 64 per cent in the previous quarter and 72 per cent in Q4 2006, according to the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association's venture capital survey results for the fourth quarter of 2007.

UK PE industry generates £5.4bn in fee income for financial services sector 22/01/2008. The latest piece of research published by The British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association confirms that the private equity industry has become a major force in the British economy. The UK private equity industry generated a total of £5.4bn of income for the financial and professional services sector in the financial year 2006-2007. This figure represents 12 per cent of the total annual revenue of the UK financial services industry, according a study entitled The Impact of Private Equity as a UK Financial Service 2006/7, conducted by Arbor Square Associates on behalf of the BVCA. 
UK small and medium-sized companies happy with PE investor-investee relationship 21/01/2008. 07/01/2008. The annual total for venture-backed liquidity reached $52.9bn in 2007, the highest annual total since 2000, according to the Quarterly U.S. Liquidity Report from Dow Jones VentureSource. 
Venture capital investment on pace to reach highest annual total since 2001 07/12/2007. Global venture capital investment is expected to top $40bn at the close of the fourth quarter, according to a global year-end analysis by Dow Jones VentureOne and Ernst & Young. This would be the highest annual total since 2001. 
Venture capital investment in India reaches $777m in first nine months 04/12/2007. Venture capitalists invested more than $777m across 57 deals in India during the first three quarters of 2007, according to the Quarterly India Venture Capital Report, published for the first time by Dow Jones VentureOne and Ernst & Young. This was nearly five times the $158m invested during the first nine months of 2006 and more than twice the annual investment record of $320m set in 2005.

Canadian venture capital investment in Q3 up on quarter and year 14/11/2007. The capital invested by funds into Canadian businesses increased in the third quarter of 2007 on both a year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter basis, according to the CVCA and Thomson Financial. A total of CAN$512m was disbursed across the country, up 17 per cent from the CAN$438m invested in the prior quarter, and up 47 per cent from the CAN$347m disbursed in Q3 2006.

Buy-out funds invest $3.3bn in Canadian companies in Q3 13/11/2007. During the three-month period ending 30 September 2007, buy-out funds invested a total of $3.3bn in Canadian companies in a total of 39 reported transactions, according to Canada's Venture Capital and Private Equity Association and Thomson Financial. In comparison, $12.2bn was invested in 107 reported buy-outs of Canadian companies during the full year of 2006.

EVCA study: family offices allocate more capital to private equity 13/11/2007. Family offices have been increasing their allocations to private equity and this trend is likely to continue, according to a new study by the European Venture Capital and Private Equity Association and the IMD Business School of Lausanne.

Emerging markets private equity funds raise $21.5bn in first half of 2007 19/09/2007. A total of 107 private equity funds focused on investing in the emerging markets of Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa raised a combined $21.5bn in capital commitments in the first half of 2007, compared to $33.2bn raised by 162 funds in all of 2006, the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association reported. 
European venture capital investment reaches 1.1bn in Q2 2007 05/09/2007. European venture capital investment reached 1.14bn in Q2 2007 despite a drop in deal flow to 213 in Q2 2007 from 223 in Q1 and 265 in the same period last year, according to the quarterly European Venture Capital Report by Dow Jones VentureOne and Ernst & Young. The amount of capital was slightly up from both the 1.11bn invested in Q1 2007 and the 1.09bn invested in Q2 2006.

Canadian buy-outs hit new record in second quarter 16/08/2007. Buy-out firms invested a record CAN$55.6bn across 52 transactions in the second quarter of 2007, according to a quarterly report released by Canada's Venture Capital & Private Equity Association and Thomson Financial. This is up from the 44 transactions recorded during the first quarter, totalling CAN$5.4bn.

Canadian venture capital investment declines in second quarter 15/08/2007. A total of CAN$426m in venture capital was invested across Canada during the second quarter of 2007, representing a decline of approximately 30 per cent from the CAN$606m invested in the first quarter, and a 12 per cent drop from Q2 2006, according to a quarterly report released by Canada's Venture Capital & Private Equity Association and Thomson Financial.

US venture capital investment volume in second quarter at highest level since 2001 09/08/2007. In it he lists ideas on how the private equity industry should tackle issues that have caused a heated public debate. Sir David has worked with an advisory group consisting of leading private equity professionals and is now seeking a wider debate based on the consultation document. The consultation period runs until 9 October.

This represents a 29 per cent increase over the $25.8bn raised in 2005.

The cleantech segment across China, Europe, Israel, and the US saw $1.28bn invested in 140 financing rounds in 2006, according to new global research from Dow Jones VentureOne and Ernst & Young. This was up significantly from $664.1m and 103 financings in 2005. However, while the investment levels are growing, cleantech remains a relatively small portion of the overall venture capital market. 
Japanese LPs weighing into private equity faster than ever before 21/02/2007. Investment allocation to private equity by Japanese companies is expected to rise over the next two to five years, according to a study completed by Adveq and Kyoto University. The survey, Adveqs first full-market survey on the attitudes of Japanese institutional investors towards private equity, revealed that 25.2 per cent of Japanese institutions are already investing in private equity; the majority of these only began doing so after 2000. The study also reveals that Japanese investors allocation to private equity, by percentage of assets under management, will triple in the next two to five years.

US venture capital-backed companies are being valued at the highest level since 2000, according to the latest research from Dow Jones VentureOne. The median pre-money valuation of US venture-backed companies reached $18.5m for 2006, up from $15.9m in 2005. 
European and North American cleantech venture investment totals $3.6bn in 2006 16/02/2007. North American and European venture capital investment in the cleantech category reached a record $3.6bn in 2006, representing a significant increase from the $2.5bn invested in 2005 and the $1.7bn invested in 2004, according to the Cleantech Venture Network.
