China-focused venture capital firm Northern Light Venture Capital has appointed John Wu as a venture partner. Wu will be based out of the firm's Shanghai office and will be responsible for evaluating and sourcing new investment opportunities in early and growth stage consumer and technology-enabled businesses.

Prior to NLVC, Wu was chief technology officer of Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group. He most recently worked on the post-merger integration between Alibaba and Yahoo! China. Previously, he worked for Yahoo! as chief architect of Yahoo!'s directory search engine and its software applications. Prior to Yahoo!, Wu was a development manager at Oracle.

Feng Deng, founding managing director of NLVC, said, 'John is a welcome addition to the NLVC team given his accomplishments at world-class companies such as Alibaba and Yahoo! His years of experience in both Silicon Valley and China further enhance our team's ability to support new and promising entrepreneurs in China.'

NLVC was founded in 2005. In January of this year the firm closed its second fund, Northern Light Venture Fund II, on $350m.
