US private equity firm Warburg Pincus has appointed Fred Hassan as a new senior adviser.  Hassan previously worked as chairman and CEO of Schering-Plough Corporation, a division of pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co Inc.

Hassan will advise the Warburg Pincus healthcare group and provide strategic counsel across the firm's portfolio.

One of the industry’s largest firms, Warburg Pincus invests across a variety of industries and has helped finance approximately 600 companies in over 30 countries around the world with total investments topping $35bn.

Last month, Warburg Pincus suffered the loss of its founder and retired chairman, Lionel Pincus, who succumbed to his battle with long-term illness.

Since then the firm has concluded two investments: the completion of a $115m financing to holding company Webster Financial Corporation,  and a $10m equity financing to Spigit, a developer of social productivity software for enterprises.
