Canadian waste-to-biofuel developer Enerkem raises $51m Canadian waste-to-biofuel developer Enerkem raises $51m

Canadian waste-to-biofuel developer Enerkem has raised CAN$53.8m ($51m) in a new round of funding from existing investors Rho Ventures, Braemar Energy Ventures and BDR Capital as well as from new investors Waste Management and Cycle Capital.

Enerkem said the new funds raised will be used to support its growth plan, including the construction of its second waste-to-biofuels plant in partnership with the City of Edmonton and Alberta Innovates. Morgan Stanley acted as Enerkem’s agent in the funding round, in which NYSE-listed waste-to-energy developer Waste Management made a strategic investment.

Enerkem’s proprietary thermo-chemical technology converts waste materials into biofuels such as ethanol and is able to process diverse carbon-based feedstocks, including sorted municipal solid waste, construction and demolition wood, as well as agricultural and forest residues.

In December 2009, Enerkem was awarded $50m in funding by the US Department of Energy for development of its planned Mississippi plant.
