Private equity and venture capital firms invested about $1.5bn in 125 Indian-founded companies in the US during 2005, according to Venture Intelligence India. This represented a slight decrease from 2004 when 129 companies raised $1.6bn.
A total of 63 out of the 125 companies closed rounds of over $10m.
The largest single investment during 2005 was the $150m raised by Harpinder Madan-co-founded FiberTower, a San Francisco, California-based provider of infrastructure and services for cellular networks. The latest round, which takes FiberTower's total financing to $225m, was led by existing investor Crown Castle International with participation from other existing investors.
Arun Natarajan of Venture Intelligence India told AltAssets, 'In today's investment climate, Silicon Valley VCs tend to like technology companies with a cost-effective offshore component. Companies with Indian founders are well equipped to leverage their India connections and quickly set up strong R&D or back-end operations in their country of origin.'
