  • The British Venture Capital Association has appointed Edmund Truell, chief executive of Duke Street Capital, as its new chairman for the coming year. Truell takes over from David Thorp, managing director of Friends Ivory & Sime Private equity. He will be chairman until June 2002. Michael Queen, 3i's finance director, has been appointed vice chairman of the BVCA and chairman of its Investor Relations Committee.

  • Barclays Private Equity has appointed Andrew Matthews, formerly a vice-president at US insurance company Financial Security Assurance.

  • Guy Hands, head of Nomura's Principal Finance Group, is leaving to set up an independent private equity fund for which he hopes to raise £2bn over the coming months.

  • Bruce Thomsson, Leona Campbell and Ian Martin have resigned from the Bank of Scotland's structured finance team. Thomson is moving to ABN Amro's mezzanine group, Campbell and Martin are to join Duke Street Capital and Credit Lyonnais respectively.

  • Lloyd Campbell has joined Rothschild, the international investment banking group from Credit Suisse First Boston. Campbell will head a new unit that will advise companies seeking private equity capital.

  • UK private equity firm Cinven has hired three investment professionals to focus on its investment agenda in Germany. Peter Gangsted will join from Allianz Capital Partners, Julia Otto from Goldman Sachs and Pascal Heberling joins from Merrill Lynch in London.

  • David Scherl, managing director, chief operating officer and chief legal officer at Whitney & Co, has become the latest high-profile figure to depart from the firm. Scherl has taken up a position as partner at legal firm Morrison Singer & Weinstein.

  • HgCapital, until recently known as Mercury Private Equity, has appointed Robin Lincoln as an associate director to its media team. Lincoln comes to the firm from Friends, Ivory & Sime Private Equity, where he spent the last two years as an investment director focusing on the media sector.

  • Pantheon Ventures, the specialist private equity investment and advisory firm, has appointed Elly Livingstone as an associate director, in London and will work closely with his colleagues in the group's San Francisco, Hong Kong, and Brussels offices. Livingstone came from CDC Capital Partners.

  • In a bid to source deals ahead of rivals, Duke Street Capital has created a new role and hired Timothy Lebus as director in charge of origination. Lebus joins from Deutsche Bank where he was managing director responsible for relationship development with a wide range of private equity and venture capital firms.

  • Law firm SJ Berwin has hired a team of four to boost its French M&A operations, particularly in the area of private equity. Mark Richardson and his three colleagues join the firm from the French arm of Andersen Legal, SG Archibald. Richardson is an M&A specialist, with particular expertise in high-tech and venture capital legal work. Joining alongside Richardson are associates Celine Maironi-Persin, Fabrice Remy and Prudence Thiry

  • President and CEO of Sonera, Kaj-Erik Relander, has resigned to join US firm Accel Partners. Relander will leave the telecommunications company to lead Accel's global wireless investment strategy.

  • The life sciences division of the private equity firm Schroder Ventures has made three senior appointments to its London team. Ken Macleod, former managing director of Serono Pharmaceuticals, has joined as venture partner, Nick Coleman, previously financial controller at Advent Venture Partners, joins as finance director for Europe, and Katja Stout has been brought in as head of communications. She was head of communications at Merlin Biosciences.

  • John Duffy, former CFO of Baring Private Equity Partners, has joined Amadeus Capital Partners as a director and chief financial officer. Amadeus specialises in early-stage technology investments.
