San Mateo-based Emergence Capital Partners, a new venture capital firm that specialises in investing in technology-enabled services start-ups, has established a Strategic Advisory Board to expand its company-building capabilities. The chairman of the Board is John Dillon, the former CEO of Salesforce.com and now CEO of Navis, a purveyor of supply chain execution software to optimise the flow of cargo at marine and rail terminals and road-based distribution centres. The other Board members are Gerry Mooney, IBM's vice president of global strategy; Peggy Taylor, former COO of PeopleSoft and a board member of RightNow Technologies and Fair Isaac Corp.; and Timothy Chou, former president of Oracle On Demand.

Global private equity giant The Carlyle Group has named Karen H Bechtel managing director and co-head of the global healthcare team, based in New York City. Bechtel joins Carlyle from Morgan Stanley & Co., where she served for 28 years as an investment banker and principal investor. The healthcare team is part of the US buy-out group, which is now investing the $7.85bn US buy-out fund Carlyle Partners IV. Carlyle said that four per cent of its investments currently are in the healthcare sector and the firm expects this number to increase over the next few years. Including Bechtel, Carlyle now has nine investment professionals dedicated to the healthcare sector.

Sentinel Capital Partners has promoted James Coady and Paul Murphy to partner. Coady and Murphy are involved in all aspects of the firm's transactions, from deal sourcing to exit. Their promotion to partners follows the Sentinel Capital's recent completion of its $319m Sentinel Capital Partners III fund.

Baring Private Equity Asia has appointed William W Flanz as a member of the Investment Committee. Flanz has been senior advisor to Baring Asia since January 2003. He was previously chief executive officer of private investment company Sterling Enterprises. Baring Private Equity Asia advises $650m in capital for MBO financing and growth capital for companies in the mid-market sector in Asia Pacific.
