James Montgomery, founder and chief executive officer of media, communications and technology investment bank Montgomery & Co, has joined GMT Communications Partners' Industry Council. GMT Communications Partners is a media and telecoms private equity specialist in Europe. The Industry Council is a select network of six key media and telecoms industry executives who provide insight and introductions for the GMT investment team. Other Council Members include Bruno Claude, former CEO of Cablecom (Switzerland), Robert Crozier, publisher of Forbes Global Magazine, and Herbert Henzler, former chairman of McKinsey Europe.
Polaris Venture Partners, a $3bn private equity firm, has announced that William J Allard has joined the firm as an executive-in-residence. Prior to joining Polaris, Allard was chairman and CEO of Marquis Jet Partners. Marquis Jet, through an exclusive partnership with Netjets (a Berkshire Hathaway company), provides private jet travel for individuals and corporations. As executive in residence, Allard will mentor entrepreneurs and advise various Polaris portfolio companies while also identifying new investment opportunities for the venture capital firm. Allard currently sits on the board of Athletes' Performance, a Polaris portfolio company, for which he was recruited by Polaris.
Austin Ventures, a $3bn venture capital firm, has promoted four members of the company's investment professional team. Craig Milius, Michael Rovner, Phil Siegel and Krishna Srinivasan have been promoted to the role of partner.
3i has established its inaugural Venture Capital Advisory Board. The Advisory Board will work alongside 3i VC partners to encourage entrepreneurship. The new Advisory Board members include Dr Ahmad Bahai, co-inventor of Multicarrier CDMA; Eric Benhamou, chairman of 3Com, Palm and Cypress Semiconductor; Ron Dollens, retired president and CEO of Guidant; Hossein Eslambolchi, entrepreneur and advisor to Silicon Valley firms; Adj Prof Dr Martin Haemmig, researcher, lecturer and consultant; David Nagel, former president and CEO of PalmSource; Paul Saffo, director of the Institute for the Future; Dr Sachio Semmoto, founder of eAccess; and Yossi Vardi, founding investor of ICQ.
3i has also announced that it has appointed Machtelt Groothuis as director within its European buy-out business. Groothuis will join the Amsterdam office and focus on mid-market buy-outs across the Benelux. She joins from Taros Capital Holdings, previously the AlpInvest Partners buy-out team. Prior to AlpInvest, Groothuis worked at McKinsey & Company, where she advised clients in the media and telecommunications sectors.
Vector Capital, a private equity firm specialising in spin-outs, buy-outs and recapitalisations of established technology businesses, has expanded its investment team with the appointments of David Fishman as principal and Elizabeth Katz as vice president.
Apax Partners has added four new associates to its Paris-based sector teams: Matthieu Cocq joins the media team and Franck Legoux joins the tech and telecom team, while Olivier Personnaz is the new member of the business and financial services team. Guillaume Cousseran is responsible for business development and replaces David Kownator who has joined the business and financial services team.
European buy-out firm Candover has appointed Boris Hentze as a director to its European team. Hentze, a German national, joins Candover from Argantis, a German buy-out fund. He has worked in the private equity industry for ten years, and was a director at 3i and JP Morgan. Prior to that he was a consultant at Andersen Consulting.
