Kelvin Liu has joined INVESCO's private equity fund of funds team as a principal. Liu will be sourcing deal flow and conducting due diligence for new partnership investments in the US as well as focusing on Asian fund opportunities. He joins INVESCO from TIF Ventures where he was a director of North American operations, a $1.3bn Singapore fund of funds. Prior to TIF, he was the director of the National Science and Technology Board, and an engineer in Singapore. Liu will be based in Palo Alto, California.
London-based venture capital firm, zouk ventures limited has appointed Professor Robert H Grubbs to the Industry Advisory Group of Cleantech Europe, an expansion stage technology fund focusing on renewable energy, emission reduction, energy storage, and water technologies. Professor Grubbs is the Atkins Profesor of Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his assistance in developing the metathesis method in organic synthesis. Professor Grubbs has published 400 papers, holds 90 patents, and has also founded four companies.
Life science venture capital group Novartis Venture Fund appointed Steven Weinstein as managing director in their Cambridge, Massachusetts office to focus on pharmaceutical and medical devices sectors. Weinstein joins Novartis from Prism Venture Partners, where he was a principal focusing on medical device and life science investments. Prior to Prism, he was a principal and Kauffman Fellow with Mid-Atlantic Venture Funds.
3i, a venture capital and private equity house, has hired Jim McLean as partner. McLean will join 3i's Menlo Park office to lead the firm's US information technology practice. Jim's track record in the venture industry spans two decades with service at companies including Accel Partners, Highland Capital Partners and most recently, ComVentures. Over his career, Jim has led various investments, including UUNet, Polycom, Alantec, Centillion, Boston Communications Group, NewCity, New Oak, Sonus, Arbinet, SiteSmith, and V-Bits. Jim's career began in the technology industry with positions at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center, L.M. Ericsson, and Network Equipment Technologies.
Linden LLC, a Chicago-based private GP that focuses on healthcare and life sciences sector, has announced the appointment of Anthony K Kesman as an operating partner. Prior to joining Linden, Kesman was with Allegiance Healthcare Corp., a subsidiary of Cardinal Health, where he most recently served as president of their Care Continuum Products and Services Group, and previously as corporate vice president, distribution. He was with Baxter International for ten years prior to that as president of Health Systems, president of Baxter's Edwards Critical Care Division, and General Manager ValueLink Business Center.
The board of Standard Life European Private Equity Trust has appointed Clive Sherling and Donald Workman as independent non-executive directors of the company. Sherling spent 17 years at Arthur Andersen, the last five years as a partner. He joined Apax Partners in 1987 and was for the last ten years, until he retired at the end of 2004, the group chief operating officer. He is a former chairman of the British Venture Capital Association and the Football Licensing Authority and former Vice-Chairman of the Sports Aid Foundation.
Workman is an investment director within the corporate markets division of The Royal Bank of Scotland plc. Since joining RBS in 1992 his responsibilities have included strategic planning and implementation and head of change management. He currently manages a portfolio of RBS unquoted investments and is also responsible for the relationship between RBS Corporate Markets and the Bank of China. He is a non-executive director of Southern Water Services, Star Capital Partners, Health Club Investments Group and Scottish Financial Enterprise.
Silicon Valley venture capital firm Mohr Davidow Ventures has hired Joshua L Green as a partner. He will focus on the areas of energy and materials. Green joins MDV after 25 years of helping to build successful emerging companies including Yahoo!, Geron, Target Therapeutics, Cerent and Xilinx. Previously he practiced law at Brobeck, Phleger and Harrison.
