The Carlyle Group has appointed Steve Sterling to the newly created position of managing director and head of research for its U.S. Leveraged Finance Group. Sterling joins Carlyle with 20 years of leveraged credit experience in leadership, originator and credit roles, most recently with Bear Stearns and, prior to that, Lehman Brothers and Bank of America. Based in New York, Sterling will oversee the research team. Carlyle’s U.S. Leveraged Finance team has nine funds under management, totalling $5.2bn.

Technology-focused investment firm Silver Lake has appointed former executive vice president and chief development officer of Cisco Systems, Charles Giancarlo, as a managing director. He will be based in the firm's Menlo Park office. As executive vice president and chief development officer at Cisco, Giancarlo led Cisco’s overall product development and market strategy activities. He was responsible for some 30,000 employees and over $30bn of product sales. Previously, as Cisco’s first vice president of business development, he successfully developed Cisco’s M&A strategy and practice. He first joined Cisco in 1993 when it acquired Kalpana. Silver Lake’s portfolio includes or has included Ameritrade, Gartner, NASDAQ, Thomson and UGS.

Secondary direct investment firm Saints Capital has appointed Robert Keppler as CFO. Prior to joining Saints, Keppler served for ten years as the CFO of Centennial Ventures. Prior to Centennial, Keppler had an 18-year tenure with Total Petroleum (North America). He started his career as a certified public accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers. Saints focuses on secondary investments in and the management of portfolios of venture and private equity-backed companies.

European private equity firm Triton has appointed Magnus Lindquist, a former vice president and CFO of automotive safety company Autoliv, as a partner. Lindquist has been vice president and CFO of Autoliv since July 2001. Previously, he was executive vice president of Perstorp, a Swedish-based chemical and materials technology corporation, with responsibility for finance, business development and strategy, treasury and IT. He has also held various positions in other Swedish companies, including Stora, Skanska, Swedish Match and SEB Bank.

US venture capital firm Lux Capital Management has appointed Dr David Sinclair as a venture partner. Dr Sinclair is a co-founder of both Sirtris Pharmaceuticals and Genocea Biosciences. He is also Associate Professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School and director of the Glenn Laboratories for the Biological Mechanisms of Aging. 'David is not only one of the most published scientists in the field of biology, but also an experienced serial entrepreneur,' said Robert Paull, managing general partner at Lux Capital.
