Clayton, Dubilier & Rice has appointed Edward M Liddy, former chairman and chief executive officer of personal lines insurer The Allstate Corporation, as a partner. Liddy joined Allstate in 1994. He served as president and chief operating officer from 1994 to 1998, chairman and CEO from 1999 to 2006 and chairman since January 2007. He led the IPO and 1995 spin-off of the company from Sears, Roebuck and Co. He is a director of 3M Company, The Goldman Sachs Group and The Boeing Company. He is also chairman emeritus of Northwestern Memorial Hospital and serves on the boards of Northwestern University and the Museum of Science and Industry.

KPCB Technology Entrepreneurs & Byers has appointed Electronics Arts co-founder and CEO William Gordon as partner. At EA, Gordon had responsibility for the company's creative products and oversight of multiple studios. He will maintain his relationship remaining as chief creative officer emeritus. Previously, Gordon served as executive vice president of marketing, executive vice president of EA Studios and as senior vice president of entertainment production. In February 2008, KPCB announced its $100m iFund initiative targeted at innovation in the Apple iPhone and iTouch platforms.

Life sciences investment group Abingworth has apppointed David Mayer as partner. His prime responsibility will be to support the firm's efforts in growth equity, which will include expansion and acquisition financings, small buy-outs and build-ups in healthcare and life science companies. Abingworth plans to invest from £10m to up to £40m in each of its growth equity investments. Mayer was most recently a managing partner at Thoma Cressey Equity Partners.

US early stage venture firm Arboretum Ventures has opened an office at the BioEnterprise facility in Cleveland, Ohio. The office will be managed by Jon J Snyder, who is joining Arboretum Ventures as a venture partner. BioEnterprise is a business formation, recruitment, and acceleration effort designed to support the growth of bioscience companies. Snyder joined BioEnterprise in January 2008, as CEO in residence. Arboretum focuses primarily on investments in medical technology and healthcare services.

San Francisco and New York-based private equity firm Paine & Partners has hired Bjarni Ármannsson and Frank O Reite as operating directors. Ármannsson and Reite will focus on opportunities in the Nordic region, with an emphasis on the seafood, energy and financial services industries. W Dexter Paine III, a founding partner of Paine & Partners, said, 'Many of us have had the pleasure of working closely with Frank and Bjarni over the years, and we have long respected each man's judgment, skill and strong business achievements in, among other regions, the Nordics, Europe and the US. Paine & Partners is currently investing its $1.2bn Paine & Partners Capital Fund III, raised in 2007.

Morgan Stanley Private Equity has hired former ICICI Venture director of private equity Aluri Srinivasa Rao to lead the firm's newly established India presence. Rao joins from ICICI Venture. Prior to ICICI, he held senior positions in a number of Indian pharmaceutical companies, including Ranbaxy and Natco Pharma. MSPE Asia will invest in India through its third Asia-dedicated private equity fund, the $1.5bn Morgan Stanley Private Equity Asia III Fund, which closed in the third quarter of 2007.

Darby Overseas Investments, the private equity arm of investment management group Franklin Templeton Investments, has appointed David Hudson as senior managing director to lead the firm's Asia operations and its global infrastructure initiatives. Hudson will be based in Hong Kong. In his new role, he will focus on developing Darby's private equity and mezzanine investment activities across Asia, which currently consist of three funds managed by teams in Hong Kong, Seoul and Mumbai. Hudson joins Darby from ING Group, where he most recently served as president and CEO, Americas, Wholesale Banking.

CEE and Turkey-focused private equity firm Bancroft Private Equity has added to its investment team with the appointment of Agis Hiliarhopoulos, who will focus on expanding the firm's activities in Southeastern Europe. Hiliarhopoulos is the head of the firm's new Athens office. Prior to Bancroft, he was a director with Global Finance, a private equity firm focused on Southeastern Europe. The firm is currently raising its third fund, Bancroft 3, with a target of €250m.

Former general manager of the Los Angeles City Employees Retirement System (LACERS) Robert Aguallo Jr, is to join private equity firm Cardinal Americas Fund as managing partner. Aguallo was previously COO for investment operations at CalPERS for 15 years, a board director on the California Association of Public Retirement Systems (CALAPRS) and general manager for five years at LACERS, where he managed managed $12bn in trust assets. He is currently a board member and vice chairman of the Robert Toigo Foundation. The Cardinal Americas Fund is a $150m private equity fund with offices in Los Angeles and Chicago.
