Third Rock Ventures has appointed Kevin Gillis as CFO. In his new role, he will support the financial operations and planning efforts for the firm's portfolio, including taking on senior finance roles for certain Third Rock portfolio companies, according to a statement. The previous CFO, Anne-Mari Paster, will continue in a consultant role. Most recently, Gillis served as vice president of finance at Coley Pharmaceutical Group. In 2007, Third Rock closed its first fund on $378m.

Venture Investment Associates has added Cliff Gilman and Jennifer Acker Ayer to the firm's investment team. Gilman was previously at Prime Buchholz & Associates where was responsible for advising the firm's clients on matters of private equity, energy and real assets investing. Acker Ayer joined VIA as a principal during the first quarter and was previously with Samson Capital, a private fixed income boutique. Venture Investment Management Company, the general partner of VIA, manages approximately $1bn. VIA is currently investing Venture Investment Associates VI, its $230m fund.

Energy-focused private equity firm Riverstone Holdings has appointed Stephen Coats as a managing director and as general counsel. He was previously a partner at the law firm Vinson & Elkins, which specialises in the energy sector. He has served as outside counsel to Riverstone in several transactions in the past. Riverstone conducts buyout and growth capital investments in the midstream, upstream, power, oilfield services, and renewable sectors of the energy industry. Since being founded in 2000, the firm has committed more than $8bn to 47 investments across these five sectors, representing companies with nearly $70bn of assets.

French fund of funds Quartilium has promoted Virginie Bourel to investment director. Prior joining Quartilium in 2005, she had worked with the audit firm Mazars & Guerard. She began her career with the French Leveraged Finance team of Natexis Banques Populaires. Quartilium is the private equity fund of funds arm of French firm Finama and is now composed of twelve investment professionals.

Venture capital firms, Accel Partners and Greylock Partners have jointly appointed Jeff Weiner as an executive in residence with both firms. Most recently Weiner was executive vice president of the Network Division at Yahoo!, where he has held various other positions in the past seven years. Weiner will advise the leadership teams of existing Accel and Greylock consumer technology portfolio companies, and will work with the firm's partners to evaluate new investment opportunities, according to a statement.

Venture firm Balderton Capital has appointed Bernard Liautaud a general partner. Liautaud is an entrepreneur who founded and built Business Objects, which was recently acquired by SAP for $6.7bn. Balderton is based in London and manages approximately $1.5bn in committed venture capital.

The Carlyle Group has appointed Sunil Kaul to join Carlyle Asia Partners as a senior director, financial services. Based in Singapore, he will focus on expanding the firm's operations in the financial services sector across the region. Kaul joins Carlyle from Citi, where he was president of Citibank Japan and a member of the Citi global management committee. Prior to this, he was based in Singapore as Asia Pacific regional head of Citi's retail banking and CitiBusiness. To date, the firm has invested more than $2.5bn in Asian financial institutions, including China Pacific Insurance, Housing Development Finance Corporation, KorAm Bank and Ta Chong Bank.

Hermes Private Equity, the private equity arm of Hermes Fund Managers, has appointed Peter Gissel as partner and Mark Nunny as investment manager. Gissel joins from Nikko Principal Investments, where he spent nine years as a principal working on mid-market transactions, primarily in the UK. He was previously a director with Price Waterhouse in their corporate turnaround and business regeneration practice. Nunny was previously with KPMG Transaction Services, where he spent four years working on due diligence assignments for both private equity and corporate clients. Prior to this, he worked in KPMG's audit and tax departments. Hermes Private Equity has £2bn committed to private equity, both as an investor in external private equity partnerships and through its own direct investment activity.

Renewable energy-focused private equity firm Hudson Clean Energy Partners has appointed Shaun Kingsbury as a partner, based in the firm's London office. In his new role he will be responsible for Hudson's European operations. Hudson invests in companies focused on renewable power, alternative fuels, energy storage and demand-side energy management. Most recently, Kingsbury was a founding partner of boutique energy investment firm Pulsar Energy Capital. Prior to that, he held senior roles at Centrica and Shell. Previously, Kingsbury was an entrepreneur-in-residence for 3i, where he advised the firm on their investment in Global Energy Services, a spin-off from wind energy company Gamesa.
