A selection of the latest deals and funds news from across the globe - essential reading for those who need to keep up-to-date with the industry's key developments. New York and London-based private equity firm TowerBrook Capital Partners has agreed to acquire a majority interest in Broadlane, a provider of supply chain management and clinical workforce management services to the US healthcare industry. No financial terms were disclosed. As part of the deal, Broadlane's senior management team will continue to retain a significant ownership interest in the company. TowerBrook has excess of $3.5bn of capital under management. The firm focuses on making investments in North American and European companies.
Global private equity firm General Atlantic has made a minority investment in Trow Global, an engineering and consulting firm, supporting Trow's global expansion. Financial terms of the investment were not disclosed. Philip Trahanas, managing director with General Atlantic, will join Trow's board of directors. General Atlantic was founded in 1980 and manages approximately $17bn in capital.
CapMan and InnovationsKapital have invested in Nordic IT-consultancy group Crayon. Crayon provides software asset management services, software licenses, consulting and training services. Following the deal, CapMan and Innovations Kapital will own 20 per cent of Crayon's parent company Artix's shares with equal holdings. InnovationsKapital is a venture capital firm that operates in the Nordic region and has commitments of €317m in four funds. CapMan has approximately €3.1bn in total capital and made the investment through its CapMan Technology 2007 fund.
The Wiener Wachstumsfonds has acquired an approximate 23 per cent stake in Austrian medical technology company Emcools. The investment will be used to finance the international marketing of its cooling technology. The Wiener Wachstumsfonds is a private equity fund managed by the IPO Group. IPO is a part of the Management Trust Holding and manages five funds with capital under management totalling approximately €150m.
Belgian private equity firm GIMV is doubling its stake in European preserved food business Scana Noliko, from 46.3 per cent to 92.6 per cent. No financial terms were disclosed. GIMV first invested in the company in 2004. LRM, an investment company focusing on companies in the Belgian province of Limburg, became a shareholder in 2000. GIMV is acquiring all of LRM's shares. Scana Noliko has about 540 employees. In the financial year 2007-2008 it had sales of around €135m.
Pharmaceutical company Vivendy Therapeutics has closed its series A financing round on CHF32m (€19.7m). European venture capital firm Aescap Venture joins the existing investor base consisting of BioMedInvest, LSP Life Science Partners and TVM Capital. Vivendy Therapeutics was founded in March 2006, as a spin-off of Inotech Biotechnologies. Aescap focuses on the creation and growth of European biomedical companies. The firm currently has €103m under management.
European private equity firm PAI partners has increased its position in Atos Origin, becoming the company's largest shareholder with 17.9 per cent of the outstanding share capital. PAI has increased its holding through the levels of five per cent, ten per cent and then 15 per cent of the shares and voting rights. PAI was the founding shareholder of Atos, created through the merger of Axime and Sligos and owned 100 per cent of the company until its listing. They do not intend to take control of the company, but are seeking representation on the supervisory board. PAI manages and advises dedicated buy-out funds with an aggregate equity value of over €11bn and has offices in Paris, London, Madrid, Milan, Munich and Luxembourg.
SunRun, a US residential solar electricity provider, has raised $12m in financing, led by venture capital firmFoundation Capital. SunRun's Solar Service offers rooftop solar electricity as a home service. Foundation Capital focuses on early stage company building, is currently directing a large portion of its investments toward cleantech companies. Approximately $250m of its recent $750m fund is earmarked for investment in the area.
Mobile telephone company GreatCall has closed a $38m Series C funding round led by Court Square Ventures. Existing investors Steelpoint Capital, Charles River Ventures, Nauta Capital, and company founders Marty Cooper and Arlene Harris also participated in the round. In addition, Sumitomo Corporation participated, with a full conversion of previously issued notes. As part of the deal, general partner of Court Square, Jim Murray, will join GreatCall's board of directors. Court Square Ventures is a venture capital firm that invests in early-stage communications, IT and media companies.
LBO specialist Sun Capital Partners has acquired Sunrise Growers~Frozsun Foods and its affiliates and subsidiaries. Financial terms were not disclosed. Sunrise is a US supplier of frozen strawberry products in addition to distributing and marketing fresh strawberries and red peppers. Sun Capital has invested in and managed over 190 companies worldwide since its inception in 1995. Sun Capital has offices in Boca Raton, Los Angeles, and New York, as well as affiliates with offices in London, Paris, Frankfurt, Tokyo and Shenzhen.
Vienna, Austria-based venture capital firm PONTIS Venture Partners and a group of business angels are participating in the first financing round for Xendex, a European developer for mobile games. Xendex has raised €2.3m.
