US private equity firm Vernon & Park Capital has appointed Stephen A Brodsky as managing director. In his new role, Brodsky's primary responsibilities will include sourcing, evaluating and monitoring investment opportunities for Bourse Partners II, an investment fund managed by Vernon & Park that focuses exclusively on investments in the exchange and financial markets sector. He will also serve on the firm's investment committee. Brodsky was most recently the president of CHX Holdings, the parent company of the Chicago Stock Exchange. He also served as the Exchange's CFO and head of Strategic Planning. Prior to joining the CHX, Brodsky was a vice president in the Investment Banking Department at Mesirow Financial.
Sovereign wealth fund Temasek Holdings has appointed Marcus Wallenberg as a member of the Temasek Board. Wallenberg chairs several companies belonging to the network of the Swedish investment company Investor, including Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken, SAAB and Electrolux. He is also deputy chairman of L M Ericsson. Most recently, he served as chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce. He also serves on the boards of Astra Zeneca, Stora Enso, Foundation Asset Management, and the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. Temasek is headquartered in Singapore and manages some $108bn.
Zurich-based fund of funds Alpha Associates has appointed Henry Potter as a partner. He currently works as senior private equity banker at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London. Alpha Associates is further expanding its investments in CEE, particularly in Russia and CIS. Alpha Associates has CHF2bn of assets under management. The firm has invested over €400m in more than 40 fund and direct investments in CEE and Russia since 1998.
The Blackstone Group has appointed Richard H Jenrette to the firm's board of directors. Jenrette founded investment banking firm Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette Inc. in 1959 with William Donaldson and Dan Lufkin, and served as DLJ's chairman and CEO. He was responsible for taking DLJ public in 1970. He later became chairman and CEO of The Equitable Companies Incorporated. Blackstone has also announced that Lord Jacob Rothschild will step down from the board.
US venture capital firm Bessemer Venture Partners has set up an advisory group for its Indian investment team. The advisors will support the team in both deal origination and working with portfolio companies. The advisory group comprises chairman Sridar Iyengar, the former CEO of KPMG India; Rama Bijapurkar, a board member of Infosys and ICICI Prudential Life and a visiting faculty member of the Indian Institute of Management; Rajeev Chitrabhanu, the CEO and managing director of JM Financial Services Private; and M K Sharma, a former vice-chairman of Hindustan Unilever. BVP, based in New York, was originally founded in 1911 as an investment vehicle for the Phipps family. In summer 2007, it closed a $1bn fund, Bessemer Venture Partners VII. Of that amount, BVP has dedicated $350m to investments in India.
European venture capital firm Wellington Partners has opened a new office in Palo Alto, California - the firm's fourth and its first outside Europe. The US office will help the firm's portfolio companies expand into the US market. The Palo Alto business development office is led by Ram Srinivasan, Silicon Valley entrepreneur and former CEO of Fireclick, who joined the Wellington team in 2006 as a venture partner. With $1.2bn under management, Wellington now has offices in London, Munich, Zurich and Palo Alto. The firm invests in companies operating in the areas of IT, media convergence, cleantech and life sciences.
Washington, DC-based private equity firm Global Environment Fund has appointed former Carlyle partner Jay Powell as a managing partner. Powell will be responsible for growth capital and private equity investments in North America. As part of this role, Powell serves as a managing director with the firm's cleantech investment team. Prior to joining GEF, Powell co-founded Severn Capital Partners, a private investment firm focused on specialty finance and opportunistic investments in industrial companies. GEF was established in 1990. The firm has three investment teams focused on cleantech, emerging markets and international forestlands.
Washington, DC-based private equity fund of funds manager PCG International has hired two new managing directors, Charles Toy and Bernard McGuire, and a new senior associate, Amit Chandra. Previously, Toy served as general counsel at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation. McGuire joins PCGI after more than ten years working as a direct private equity investor and entrepreneur in China and the Asia Pacific region. Chandra most recently was an associate with buy-out firm Key Principal Partners, where he invested in mid-market private equity transactions in the US. PCGI has approximately $1bn under management.
