European private equity firm Bridgepoint has appointed Charles Barter as its general counsel. Barter, who was head of the private equity group of UK law firm Travers Smith, will join Bridgepoint in October 2008. Barter joined Travers Smith in 1985, becoming a partner in its corporate department in 1995. He is a former head and co-founder of Travers Smith's private equity group and has acted for many institutional investors and management teams.

New York-based private equity firm CCMP Capital has appointed Greg Brenneman as chairman of CCMP's Investment Committee effective 30 September 2008. Brenneman is currently CEO of Quiznos, a quick service restaurant chain. He will continue to serve Quiznos as its executive chairman. In the 1990s, Brenneman helped in the transformations of Continental Airlines, PwC Consulting and Burger King. Brenneman also serves on the boards of The Home Depot and Automatic Data Processing.

US venture capital firm Voyager Capital has hired Diane Fraiman as a partner to focus on internet, software and digital media investments. Fraiman was formerly senior vice president of marketing and business development for Sanctum, a start-up providing web application security software. Prior to that, she was vice president of worldwide marketing for Informix Software. Voyager has $370m under management and has offices in Seattle, Menlo Park and Portland.

Aurora Russia, the mid-market private equity firm that focuses on the Russian market, has appointed Dan Collinson Koch as a non-executive director. Koch is the chairman of Deloitte & Touche CIS and has been resident in Russia for the past ten years.

US private equity firm WHI Capital Partners has hired Pamela Forbes Lieberman as an advisory board member. Lieberman was formerly the CEO and president of True Value Company, whose businesses include True Value Hardware, Grand Rental Station, Taylor Rental, Party Central, Home and Garden Showplace and Induserve Supply. Lieberman was previously senior vice president and CFO ShopTalk, a start-up voice application software company.

Permira has appointed Henry L Chen as head of Greater China. He will be responsible for running the firm's new Hong Kong office and for developing Permira's activities in the region. Chen joins Permira from Goldman Sachs, where he most recently served as co-head of the General Industrials Group for Asia, excluding Japan. Before that, he was COO of Corporate Finance. The firm opened its Hong Kong office in June of this year. It also has an office in Tokyo, which opened in 2005.

Seattle, Washington-headquartered venture capital firm Maveron has appointed Amy J Errett as a partner. Errett will focus on consumer digital media, internet services and e-commerce ventures. She will be based in the firm's San Francisco office. Most recently, Errett served as CEO of lifestyle company Olivia and Olivia.com. She also founded M&A advisory firm The Spectrem Group and was an officer and part of the senior management team at E*Trade. Errett currently serves on the boards of iBloks and LiveMocha. Maveron, founded in January 1998, has recently invested in companies including Potbelly Sandwich Works, Pinkberry and LiveMocha. The firm has approximately $850m under management. It invests up to about $20m per company.

Early stage technology venture capital firm El Dorado Ventures has appointed Sheeraz Haji as an entrepreneur-in-residence. Haji will help the firm identify new investment opportunities in segments including online marketing, web-based consumer applications, software-as-a-service and green consumer services. Haji is the former president of EDV portfolio company Convio. Previously, he was co-founder and CEO of GetActive Software. EDV co-led the first round of venture capital funding for GetActive. EDV, founded in 1986, invests in sectors including software, services, communications, systems, cleantech and other emerging technologies.

UK lower mid-market private equity firm Sovereign Capital has hired Sarah Pratt as a researcher. Sovereign now has a 20-strong investment team. Pratt will be responsible for supporting Sovereign's ongoing research in its defined service-based sectors of education and training, healthcare and support services. Pratt joins Sovereign from Citigroup Global Markets, where she served as a researcher supporting an investment banking team. Sovereign has completed ten transactions in 2008 including three platform investments; most recently 1st Saxon-Clenmay for its new social housing maintenance platform Renovo.

The European Private Equity and Venture Capital Association has appointed 11 new members to its board of directors. They replace members who have either reached the end of their mandate or are stepping down for other reasons. The new EVCA board members are André-Xavier Cooreman (Sofinim, Belgium), Ole Mikkelsen (Scandinavian Equity Partners, Denmark), Andreas Schober (Hannover Finanz, Germany), Pantelis Vernikos (Alpha Ventures, Greece), Craig Butcher (Mid Europa Partners, Hungary), Fred Van Efferink (ICOS Capital Management, Netherlands), Kathryn Baker (Reiten & Co, Norway), Paulo Caetano (FromentInvest, Portugal), Jaime Hernandez Soto (MCH Private Equity, Spain), Anne Rannaleet (IK Investment Partners, Sweden) and Jirí Beneš (3TS Capital, Czech Republic). The board oversees EVCA's budget and strategic annual review and is responsible for establishing the Association's Professional Standards and observance of these by members.

The Carlyle Group chairman Louis V Gerstner, Jr is to step down from the post which he has held since January 2003. He will become a senior advisor to Carlyle's Asia, Europe, Japan and US buy-out funds. A successor has not been named, according to the firm. Prior to Carlyle, Gerstner was chairman and CEO of IBM, until 2002.

Seattle, US-based mid-market buy-out firm Evergreen Pacific Partners has hired Edward A Whatley, Jr as a senior vice president. Whatley will be responsible for originating investment opportunities throughout the Western US and Canada as well as participate in all activities of the firm throughout the entire investment cycle. Whatley joins Evergreen from Credit Suisse, where he most recently served as a director. Before that, he served as a director at CIBC and a group director in the bank's Investment Banking Division - Leveraged Finance. Earlier this month, Evergreen closed its second fund, Evergreen Pacific Partners II, on its hard cap of $425m, above its $400m target. The firm plans to make eight investments from the new fund, as well as follow-on investments when appropriate.
