Babcock & Brown has appointed the firm's current CFO, Michael Larkin, to become its CEO, replacing Phil Green, who will remain on the board. Larkin joined Babcock & Brown in 2004 as group chief financial officer. Prior to joining Babcock & Brown, Larkin was group financial controller for Lend Lease Corporation, based in London. Larkin has also held various positions with Coopers & Lybrand for 13 years, culminating in his appointment as director of tax services in the financial services sector. Babcock & Brown is in the process of selecting a new CFO. Jim Babcock, founder and executive chairman, is also stepping down as chairman but will remain on the board. Replacing Babcock is Elizabeth Nosworthy, the firms' current deputy chairman.
HSBC Private Equity (UK) , has hired Grant O'Neill as an investment manager and Helen Posner as an associate. O'Neill joins from Nikko Principal Investments where he worked on a number of UK transactions. Prior to this, he worked in both corporate recovery and audit at PWC. Posner moves across from HSBC Principal Investments' funds team. She was previously in the private equity due diligence team at HSBC Private Bank. O'Neill and Posner will report to Mahmoud Atalla, head of HSBC Private Equity (UK).
Venture capital firm Institutional Venture Partners has hired Elizabeth Bailey Weil as a senior associate and Michael McLean as an associate. Weil will focus on internet and digital media investments while McLean will focus on communications and wireless investments. Prior to joining IVP, Weil worked at Menlo Ventures as an investment analyst. Previously, Weil was manager of marketing at online gaming company Xfire. Prior to IVP, McLean was an analyst at the investment banking division of JPMorgan where he worked on strategic and financing transactions for a number of leading technology companies within the internet and digital media, software, semiconductor and communications verticals. IVP has approximately $2.2bn of committed capital and primarily invests in the later stages in companies. Earlier this year, IVP closed its 12th fund, IVP XII, on $600m.
US venture capital firm New Enterprise Associates has appointed Edward T Mathers as partner. Mathers will focus on healthcare investments in areas including biotechnology and specialty pharmaceuticals. Mathers most recently served as executive vice president, corporate development and venture, at MedImmune. He was responsible for the company's licensing and business development activities and led the company's venture capital subsidiary MedImmune Ventures. Mathers previously also worked as vice president, marketing and corporate licensing and acquisitions at Inhale Therapeutic Systems and spent 15 years at Glaxo Wellcome. He started his career at Ortho Pharmaceuticals Corporation, a division of Johnson & Johnson, as a researcher. His current board positions are Kemia and Plexxikon.
Petteri Änkilä, the CEO of Finnish private equity firm Amanda Capital, is to step down. The firm's CFO, Petter Hoffström, will serve as acting CEO, the firm said. Änkilä has been Amanda's CEO since March 2004. The firm has also appointed Ilkka Rantanen as a director, business development. He currently works as an investment professional for Credit Suisse Private Equity Fund, DLJ Merchant Banking Partners in London. Earlier this year, Amanda announced that it was establishing a new vehicle to invest globally in listed private equity firms and funds. Amanda Group currently has €2.4bn of assets under management. The firm invests in funds across Europe, the US, Asia and Russia.
