New York-based private equity firm Summer Street Capital Partners has hired James D Chambers as an operating partner. In 2001, Chambers co-founded Conundrum Partners, a management advisory and investment firm. Previously, he served as the president of business services for Quest Diagnostics. Chambers has also held senior management positions at Corning, Vista Chemical and Conoco. He will join current operating partners Doug VanOort, John Burgess and Michael Serventi in reviewing prospective investments and providing operational resources for Summer Street's portfolio companies. Summer Street has approximately $300m of committed capital.

Media and communications-focused private investment firm Quadrangle Group has hired Steven Davidson as CFO. Prior to joining Quadrangle, Davidson was a managing director at Mourant, a global third-party fund administrator. In this role, he was responsible for opening the firm's first US office and managing all aspects of the US business. Prior to joining Mourant in 2004, Davidson was vice president of BISYS Alternative Investment Services (formerly Dalessio, Millner & Leben), where he was responsible for all aspects of delivering third-party fund administration services to private investment funds. He was previously a vice president at JPMorgan Private Bank and, prior to that, a manager at Coopers & Lybrand. Quadrangle Group has approximately $6bn under management.

Miami-based private equity firm HIG Capital has appointed Timothy B Armstrong as a managing director to help develop HIG's new larger mid-market practice and invest the $1.5bn HIG Middle Market Fund. Prior to joining HIG, Armstrong was a partner at France-based Apax Partners, where he had been responsible for retail and consumer investing. Amstrong began his private equity career in 1996 when he joined Saunders Karp & Megrue, and he spent the subsequent ten years investing in the mid-market. In 2005, Saunders Karp & Megrue merged with Apax Partners where Armstrong continued as a partner in its retail and consumer industry group. HIG has approximately $7.5bn under management.

US venture capital firm, Charles River Ventures has hired Lisa Bonner Haines as general counsel. Haines joins Charles River from Monster Worldwide where she served as associate general counsel and primary senior attorney supporting monster.com. Prior to Monster, Haines served as assistant general counsel for Interactive Data Corporation where she advised management on Securities and Exchange Commission and New York Stock Exchange compliance matters. Before Interactive Data, Haines was a junior partner at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr. In her new role, Haines will oversee all legal matters for Charles River, including portfolio company financings, fund formation, and employment matters. Charles River has approximately $2.1bn under management.

US mid-market buy-out specialist Littlejohn & Co has hired Kenneth Warren as CFO. Deborah Jorde, who has been Littlejohn's CFO since 2001, will take on the role of investor relations and fund marketing support. Warren was previously senior vice president of finance of Quadrangle Group, where he was responsible for the hedge fund and asset management businesses. Prior to joining Quadrangle in 2005, Warren was the CFO at Clearwater Capital Partners. His prior experience includes Credit Suisse First Boston, The Beacon Group and Arthur Andersen. Littlejohn has approximately $1.6bn in committed capital.
European technology-focused venture capital firm Wellington Partners has appointed former Yahoo! manager and 3i sector partner Daniel Waterhouse to its London office as a venture partner. In his new role, Waterhouse will focus on the digital media and online sectors. He will be involved in the evaluation of investment opportunities across Europe and will also provide strategic and operational support to existing portfolio companies building or expanding their international operations, the firm said. Previously, Waterhouse was a sector partner at 3i, where he worked on venture capital and buy-out deals in the digital media space across Europe and North America. Wellington targets companies in the IT, media convergence, cleantech and life sciences sectors.

Teaneck, New Jersey-based private equity firm Hudson Clean Energy Partners has appointed Paul Ho as a principal. Ho will oversee the firm's activities in the biofuels and biomass sectors. He joins Hudson from Credit Suisse in New York, where he was director in the Alternative Energy Group, in charge of the firm's banking efforts in alternative fuels on a global basis. As part of this role, Ho worked closely with a number of private equity firms with respect to their clean energy investments. Hudson invests in companies focused on renewable power, alternative fuels, energy storage and demand-side energy management.
Francesco Santinon, supported by Andy Glennon and Colin Stirling, has completed an MBO of the former private equity business from Aberdeen Asset Management to create a new independent private equity business. Spirit Capital Partners has assumed the management of about £100m of private capital from Aberdeen and will continue to work with the current portfolio of investments. The business will continue to operate nationally from offices in London and Leeds. Industry veteran Graham Dewhirst, former partner and head of investor relations at Bridgepoint, will join the new business as chairman. A further seven executives from the former Aberdeen private equity team have transferred to the new entity.

Media and communications-focused private equity firm Providence Equity Partners has appointed Sean Tong to the firm's Hong Kong office as a managing director. Tong joins from General Atlantic, where he was formerly a managing director in the firm's Hong Kong office. While at General Atlantic, Tong served on the board of directors of WuXi Pharmatech and Oak Pacific Interactive. Prior to that, he worked at Morgan Stanley & Co. in New York. Providence is headquartered in Providence, US and has offices in New York, Los Angeles, London, Hong Kong and New Delhi.

Texas-based Austin Ventures has appointed Mike Dodd as a venture partner. Dodd will work on investments in early and expansion stage IT companies, with a focus on application and infrastructure software and technology-enabled business and consumer services. Most recently, Dodd was senior vice president of corporate development with Omniture, a publicly traded online business optimisation software company. AV has $3bn under management.
The European Venture Philanthropy Association, launched in October 2004, has appointed Serge Raicher, a co-founding trustee of EVPA and a partner of Pantheon Ventures, as its new chairman, succeeding EVPA founder Doug Miller. EVPA has also announced that it is opening a new office in Brussels. Miller will continue as an EVPA trustee. EVPA is made up of individuals and organisations interested in or practising venture philanthropy.
